Keep in mind that most individuals use 80-100 gallons/person each day. When an emergency happens, you should have your own supply of clean water to rely upon. Many resources say to store at least 1 gallon per person per day. (This is a bare-bones minimal). You will want to have additional water for washing, hygiene, cooking and cleaning. We recommend more than just the minimum for survival.
3 gallons per day for each person is a better starting point so that you have enough water to take care of your needs. Keep in mind that water becomes a very precious comodity in times of emergency.
We recommend using 55 gallon barrels for storing your water. They are very strong and the FDA recommends them for safe storage of drinking water. Our barrels are made of polyethylene which are always BPA free. So there is no worry of water contamination.
For a family of 4 to have a 2 week (14 day) supply of emergency water... you would need a total of 168 gallons of water. (3) 55 gallon barrels would take care of your families needs for 2 weeks. Keep in mind, that there is no guarantee that clean water will be available to you right away. If a disaster were large enough you could be without water for weeks.
You might find that nearby family members or neighbors have no water and that you need to share the emergency supply of water that you have. Having more is ALWAYS a great plan.
New 55 Gallon Water Barrels$98
WARNING: Using OLD Barrels. The design of most "Blue Water Barrels" has not changed and most will work with our system HOWEVER, keep in mind that the openings for the barrels can begin to warp and change shape over time if
they are exposed to the elements for long periods of time. This can make it more difficult to seal a lid onto the barrel without some form of leaking. Getting new barrels will normally correct this problem and eliminate any leaking.
